Words of Wisdom December 17

It is needful, from time to time – and especially in the days of increasing darkness – to withdraw completely from the world of Men to better hear the voice of Spirit.

The word of the day is solitude.

found once again

Many, many moons ago I read a poem written by Tim Leary and did not quite manage to memorize it, though it stuck in my mind... a zen-type thought that quite thoroughly spoke to me of the need for balance and simultaneously, of extremes. Today I found it again...

The Moment Of Fullness

Grab hold tightly
Let go lightly

The full cup can take no more
The candle burns down
The taut bow must be loosed
The razor edge can no long endure

Nor this moment re-lived

So now...
Grab hold tightly
So now...
Let go lightly

And another...

Take In-Let Go

To breathe in
You must first breathe out
Let go

To hold
You must first open your hand
Let go

To be warm
You must first be naked
Let go

Thank you, Timothy. et merci beaucoup à Francesco Colonna Romano pour la page avec ces mots.

HEX of a weekend!

Well I have all the paint applied and am ready to begin thinking about packaging. Somehow, I always though that "real artists" were free from the sort of deadline pressures that plague us designers and "commercial artists"... but I guess not. Maybe that's just the "starving" variety of artist? LOL

Anyway this is what I have been up to this weekend. Friday night I finished cutting and priming the "blanks" but not a single line was drawn nor brush decorative brush picked up until yesterday!

This one was requested, on wood, 20" diameter, as the customer sent me a photo of 4 designs hanging on a gallery wall and asked for me to replicate them. Since this is folk art Inot copyrightable) and the designs were familiar to me I agreed. However, in the photo they sent me this sign was painted with 16 rays. This is incorrect; there is no proper use for that number in a sign.. . this is a yearly blessing (rays of the sun) and therefor I painted it as fortnights (24) which is allowable but uncommon. The center holds a six petaled flower (good fortune) surrounded by a protective 6 pointed star.

This is another yearly blessing sign, similar to one that I have seen called the "Daddy Hex" though I have no idea why. I hope the folks who are getting these signs NEED the over-abundance of fire energy (they are not going to CA, thank the Gods!). Traditionally many of these colors were not used. In the old days, you used what you had... red (from the barn) white (from painting trim) and green (from the porch floor) were common. Other colors were not and color was not of significance as much in those days. Now, I often use color representationally and, while I am glad to fill orders, I would prefer that folks consult more on the significance of what they order.

This is another one that I was not personally familiar with from my work. I found it on the web with some malarky explanation saying that the leaf motifs around the border represent family members support and that the multicolored rosette was for joy. I dunno who made that up or why but what it told ME, while I painted it, was that it was a prayer for abundance / fertility through the four seasons with yellow for spring, green for summer, orange for fall and brown for winter. Now, THAT makes sense!

Here is the last of the four custom designs finished and drying on my workbench. This one I wonder about too.. it is familiar to me, as you can see by the smaller image, which is the design painted in it's fullness on a prosperity box. WHY anyone would leave out the FAITH (unless they were either ignorant of what they were painting... or perhaps it was a Freudian slip?) when painting a prayer is beyond me... Also I have no idea why they painted the wheat images blue, unless here again they did not understand the symbolism.

These folks also ordered 5 of my designs from my website, painted on art paper for framing under glass. These I completed during the week.

I also sold the 24" exterior Love and a Happy Home this week and the check arrived this weekend so I get to ship it too! It is a Christmas gift and I will be wrapping it too.

Since all of these things are painted while in sacred space, this has been a VERY intense weekend!

The Universe is telling me stuff...

I have started a new practice, in my morning meditation and rituals. And as a result, the Universe At Large, or the Powers That Be or some such out there hands me an aphorism of the day.

So I am going to start posting them here... and emailing them out to anyone who would like to have a thought pop up in their mailbox each morning.

So far I have gotten:

Sept 3 The seeds of all you need to know are within you. Plant and nurture them and you will Know. Books only confirm Inner Wisdom.

Sept 2 You share your knowledge and wisdom constantly, by deed and word. You may not see the Student, but s/he is there.

Sept 1 Hold on. Don’t give up. Open your eyes and look Beyond, for there is help. You have only to see it.

Aug 31 "Everything that goes up must come down" is not fatalism; it is a statement of the necessity for grounding while we sojourn in the earthly realm.

Aug 30 Seek ye therefore BALANCE. It is not static nor does it stem the Flow; rather it adjusts gently, like the tides.

Aug 29 2007 There is a time for Eagle and a time for Dove; it is best when Eagle remembers Dove heart and Dove remembers Eagle might.

If you would like to hear directly what the Universe shares with me send an email to The Hexenmeister with THOUGHTS as the subject line and Subscribe in the body.

Changes

I realized, while running my errands this morning -- picking up mail, dropping rain-destroyed yard-sale leavings at the dump (really there was little that the Freecyclers did not take), putting our proceeds in the bank, mailing off several boxes (one LONG delayed and yes, Siduri, one to you) and getting my weekly allotment of local fresh shrimp -- that something has changed. My assemblage point, perhaps?

Something, for sure. There was a metaphysical aspect to my "lost weekend" beyond just what was attached to the dispersal of the stuff. I am calmer, for sure. more "here" (in the moment, in the flow) and less "here" (attached to this physical space) simultaneously. More aware of the shades of anger and discontent in those around me (hence the subject of this entry...)

Now, maybe my concept of assemblage point is different from others but this is how I see it.

We are the sum total of our experiences to date and how we react to/view them. From that point we look out at the universe and its many layers if we are lucky enough to be able to see them and that point affects our experience of them as much as they may affect it. Mostly, we just lumber along the path, and where we look out from yesterday, tomorrow, last week, next month, maybe even next year and beyond are pretty darn close. The assemblage point doesn't -- usually -- change much on its own. It takes something... shocking? abrupt? sudden? a "whack 'longside the head by the Celestial 2x4" to change it. Sometimes. Sometimes even that doesn't make a permanent change. The shock can be a good thing, a trauma or something neutral but totally unexpected -- something that knocks us loose from our moorings for a bit, like my bout of hyperthermia of the weekend -- and allows us to experience the universe through a different portal.

It's not just a window we look out of, but a door or window through which we interact.

And mine changed

totally trivially, and without any thought to the matter I realized that I experience my body differently. Not as fat... but it's as if I can feel the smaller sized body as though the remaining pounds were not there. I know I will eat less; what looks like a portion to me is smaller.

And I am more readily reading/hearing/understanding the threads of the "flow"... which told me of a new practice as part of my morning meditation today, and that I needed an additional small cauldron for the main altar to do this, so the last one from the hardware store was my last errand before work today.

And I know that my next house will have an enclosed porch, through which I can enter and leave and where I can do a cleansing ritual in relative privacy (something there is NONE of on either of the two, totally open, porches at the Studio) before entering my home, as needed. For now, I will just add a grounding bit similar to my morning yard ritual, before I enter.

My art promotes WitchCraft

There is a community of artists online, of which I am a part, which encourages members to host virutal art shows on their websites, including and promoting the art of all in the group. It is a diverse bunch and most recently a piece of art from one of the members was rejected from a show by one of the others because it "promoted witchcraft..." I did not participate in this show, but I do not recall in the info that went out soliciting contributions, that there were restrictions as to content or theme. The group is in turmoil at the moment over this... individual rights of the actively Christian artist, discrimination issues, etc.

I am a Witch. I do not hide the fact and my art is strongly tied into my Craft, though it was taught to me by my very Christian grandmother... who painted the traditional designs (many of which I also use) and empowered them with prayers "in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, Amen" as I did (and still will if asked or if I know the buyer is of that belief system).

But I AM a Witch. And I stand proudly as a Witch, working magic and invoking the Gods for the good of all. I work for the protection of our troops, and for my homeland. I work for the protection of those of my heart and of my hearth, of kith and kin. I work actively to help our planet. And I work for understanding, as we are all together here on this rock spinning around a ball of glowing gasses in the vacuum of space. Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Jew, Witch... and all the rest... MUST accept that each Way calls to its own. The Christian way is not the "only way" for everyone though I will grant that it is the only way for some. Ditto all the rest.

I am considering hosting a virtual art show this fall -- October? November? -- if it would not be too trite... "The Season of the Witch" for "witchey-themed art"... art by Witches... witchey women and witchey men that I know are wonderful artists... trained and naive...

just thinking...

turning tides, first harvest season dawns

During my morning meditation, guided by Frigga's handmaiden, Snotra, this is what came out...

Aspirations, fleet,
Flutter around the edges
of awareness.
Newly forming, as yet
unbirthed
they await New Moon.
First Harvest fruits
and revelations
gathering with the tide.
A rich bounty of blessings
as the season turns.

I'm looking for my old bread recipe,
the one with wheat and oats and corn,
the Staff of Life
to toast this Harvest Season.
A bit of blueberry jam will
be nice too.

Reflections on a Hex theme: Smooth Sailing Through Life

One of the more traditional themes in Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign painting is the scalloped border with many small, inward-facing scallops which surrounds the larger motifs. This design is interpreted as an additional prayer for "smooth sailing through life." They face inward, towards the energy of the main focus of the circular design, for the outer circle is drawn as the boundary of the Gods' will so of course all prayers remain inside this sphere.

I was thinking about that today, in the light of what we may want out of life. Many folks whose lives are overly busy, stressful, difficult, and who face challenges that they may not believe they are up to meeting, are prone to pray for an easy life, to ask for fewer problems.

Believe me, if I were one of those folks, they would have been a day for wanting to make such a request. From "simple" web change requests that weren't, to my favorite vegetable stand now being closed on Tues, to having to run an extra errand WAY on the other side of my normal route, to the flat tire that I got after that errand, to a reported printing problem with a project that I thought I was done with weeks ago, to the discovery, upon picking up the mail, that my newly rehabilitated school loan had been sold to yet ANOTHER sleazeball outfit (instead of being passed off to Ford, to be consolidated with my other loans, as requested)... today had plenty of challenges.

HOWEVER like a big ship sailing through rolling seas, none of these challenges proved more than that... a challenge which was dealt with. We were not the little sailboat, being capsized by the waves...

And that, my dears, is "smooth sailing through life."

the morning's meditation

This is our Mother upon whom we walk
from whom we came
who gives us sustenance
to which we return.
Hail, Mother.

This is our Father under whom we walk
who lights our way
by night and day
and gives us guidance.
Hail, Father.

This is our Sister who cycles round
as she circles round
marking time and
shining hope.
Hail, Sister.

These are our Brothers who lay down their lives
to give us meat
for strength and life.
Honor them.
Hail, Brothers.

Almost every day I go to the gym and work out. And almost every workout ends with a brief (10 min or so) session in the sauna, where I let the heat soak into the muscles while I relax and meditate.

Since I have been following the moon through the signs, as reflected by Frigga's handmaidens, my meditation has been started with the germ of awareness of the Handmaiden of the day. Where it goes from there varies...

Today I had in my awareness, as well, the observation that (after an apparently brief "blip" on the weight loss curve last week) I appear to be back on track with this goal. I did a mid-week "unofficial check in" just to see, after my splurge of last evening (the first corn on the cob of the season, roasted on the grill... two ears...).

My theme for today -- the Handmaiden being Vor -- is Understanding. So I was thinking on understanding and saw in my mind's eye the strands of yarn that I put up in my Craft room some time back, to represent the reins of my life... And my Understanding is that having once again consciously picked up these reins, I am in the drivers seat.

I was also thinking a bit on my connection with the other realms (for lack of a better word)... and my witchey work. And the hex work books I have been getting in the mail and reading from, and the Wild Witch book that I picked up again (I was from the beginning, a wild witch though I never used the term... and though I work with specific deities now, that is still where my practice is rooted) and as those thoughts rolled around in my awareness, out came the poem with which I started this entry.

"That Thing That I Do"

Often times when my kids need my help, they will contact me, explain the problem, and say something like "and Mom, if you could do that thing that you do, I'd really appreciate it."

Sometimes that involves designing and painting a Hex, but equally often it involves other forms of magic. Which got me to thinking about my path and how an originally Christain hexeri, who was taught to empower her work "in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. Amen" came to be so comfortable working with various of the old Gods (and Goddesses of course).

First off, there is the basic Hex premise -- that is rather at odds with the typical relationship of Christian to their God -- that we are co-creators with deity of that which manifests. Many Christians, or so it seems to me, feel more like pawns in the celestial chess game as they humbly petition their God for whatever blessings they might need. This conention is supported by at least one sermon that I heard preached by a Baptist minister, in which he exorted his congregation to not just sit idly by waiting for God to act, but to get involved in their own future. As he put it "God can't lead if you aren't moving!" In my universe, both the Gods and I hold the reins of the cart.

Now, there is another philosphy that says "we make our own reality," which could be construed as removing the Gods totally from the picture. I take it slightly differently, however, noting that I have the choice in my reaction to the realith that we have collectively manifested and therefore can "make of it" what I will -- a positive learning experience or a cesspool of mysery in which to wallow, if They should choose to pull harder in their direction that I pull in mine.

Which brings me to one of the least talked about, but most important, aspects of working magic in all forms... the "research" that the Witch puts into it prior to drawing the first line or chanting the first word. Believe me, you don't want to get into a "witch war" with a God or Goddess! Besides the obvious that they ARE after all Gods and the Norns COULD cut our thread at any time, that is not the best or easiest way to learn lessons. Remember when you were a little kid and had a "battle of wills" with your parents? Now imagine that on steroids! LOL So the SMART witch spends much more time sitting at the Loom and looking, analyzing and thinking than would be apparent. S/he has to start from here and now and investigate all the threads -- and potential threads -- branching out from this moment in time/space with the desired outcome in mind. There are "threads" for every one of us, all of our things, and even for situations that have not even happened yet that may go out and affect others that we would not expect to be involved in ways we -- alone -- could not have predicted. We need to look at the tapestry that has been already woven to intuit hidden agendas, thoughts and patterns of behavior, all of which may affect our potential outcome. And we need to consider all of those things just to determine if we CAN get from here to there, and then the best way to do it.

Magic -- including hex magic -- requires the adjustment of threads and that requires energy. Subtle changes here and now CAN work miracles down the road, if properly applied. But the bigger the change the more energy that is required. I liken this to the inertia that I noticed in groups, specifically my family that consisted of 5 children. When we had an extra kid or two over to play, things pretty much rolled along as usual. Our "rules" and routines applied because our 5 were the majority energy and they could easily absorb the visitors as part of the group. However when we had a larger number of visiting kids -- as often happened in our small community -- the dynamic changed as the visitors energy was greater. If they were a homogeneous bunch (another larger family that lived nearby) their rules and behaviors tended to come to the fore; if they were a random bunch, often chaos was near at hand until the local "goddess" (AKA Mom) took the reins.

Likewise, when dealing with manipulation of the universe -- in the face of much inertia -- it is often easier to make several small adjustments (spells) allowing time for each to come to fruition and for the "beginning" analysis before each new work is begun.

This is why when asked for a hex -- or other working -- our response is traditionally "I will try for you." At the point when we are asked we have not had the time yet to sit at the loom and look. We do not know if there are other issues in the family in which the wife has asked for a fertility hex -- for example, or if the person requesting the protection hex has made a lifetime habit of giving out keys and making "shady" friends. The hex, no matter how powerful... no matter how powerful the hexeri who paints it... can only do SO much in the face of contrary energy.

But most often, we WILL try for you!

Blog intergration

Well, folks, your Hexmeister turned geek this afternoon and has managed to integrate this blog in with her website.

Now, hopefully I will be able to keep it more up-to-date, as well.

My design work with Vision IPD has taken much of my time of late, but starting tomorrow our outside hex signs will be once again displayed on our rack, outside the studio on weekends. This has been problematical, at best, as the winds seem to LOVE tipping over the display, and our first attempt at securing it with tent stakes was a decided failure. WIMPY stakes. However we will investigate stouter version in the next weeks. Also stouter versions of the picture hangers have been obtained and will be secured to the rack.

My main occupation of late, with the designs, however, has not been in painting, but in the application of some of the more popuar designs to household objects. These are NOT hand-drawn or hand-painted -- and therefore do not pack the magical "punch" as the designs shown on this site, but may appeal on a different level. They will be shown by TerraLune, a gallery that I am establishing online (initially) and hopefully in physical space next year, to feature art and objects which call on the Elements and the Gods/Goddesses in diverse ways, promoting healing of the Earth, environmental activism and awareness and worshipful respect for all of nature.

can we say "disorganized?"

I just learned today that the "artwalk" sales event is being moved from the waterfront street to a park in downdown Morehead City, AND that instead of assigned places, it will be "first come, first serve" for set up starting 3 pm tomorrow... so you can see what my mid-afternoon will be.

I think this is where the event SHOULD have been to start with, but on the other hand, they did managed to get a good promo piece in the paper last night that said, quite clearly, it was located on the waterfront! That is the type of organization that has plagued this event from the get-go, sorry to say. They are also supposed to have entertainment (musicians... ) this weekend, which the promo stuff said would be happening last weekend, too. We'll see...

So we will have "hex in the park". I am hoping my "practice safe hex" bumper sticker will arrive soon, too!

festival follies

Well it traveled well, set up like a dream and when time came to haul the goodies home overnight (security being iffy...) it came down easier than it went up.

That being said, what I got out of today was a long day of sitting in the sun (albeit on the Morehead City waterfront) painting hex signs in the hot sun (and rain... but that was just for half an hour and most of that time I didn't even stop painting.) No sales, no nibbles even.

Wrong venue (folks were buying VERY INEXPENSIVE inpulse items and "beachy-" theme items.) Need to move north, is getting stronger each day! LOL

and the issues were compounded by the lack of organization/communication/OTHER events to draw and keep people in town. Attendance was sparse and most of the overheard conversations were about "what else was happening" as they didn't know (actually... nothing... but the Beaufort Music Festival here in my current home town!

I will go back tomorrow afternoon and next weekend, though. Even though y'all pretty much know, by now, my feelings about the season of Old Brazen Face here in the south, things could be worse than spending a day outside, painting. Even if I DID have trouble keeping the paint from drying in the palettte before I got it on the hex! LOL

This was, in one way, a very unusual day. I found not one, not two, but THREE "lucky" pennies! Two were on the ground near where I parked Artie in the vendors' parking area. One was on the ground in my next-door-neighbor's booth. I of course gave it to her, over her protests that I had found it. It was in HER booth, after all!

I find myself wishing that I had been able to come home to a quiet, empty house (except for the pup, of course, who would have been doubly glad to see me and crossing all 4 legs). I ended up cooking supper, as K was having a bad day (not that putting the boil on a mess of shrimp and cutting salad fixings and throwing them in a bowl is a tough chore) but after spending all day "on" I just want solitude to veg.

Those of you to whom I owe emails will just have to wait a couple of days.

flying high in festival mode!

It's been a LONG time since I had a booth an a festival type event... since back in the 70s when I did batik.

Boy I have a ton to do... and work (regular work -- my "9-5" as art director and lead designer for Vision IPD) isn't slowing down. However I am beginning to remember the "festival high" that I used to get leading up to the event... when in the "old days" I would be sewing like a madwoman, putting together John and Martha batik dolls to stuff. Sewed my finger then, too.

Now it's just a matter of putting temp. hangers on the back of the large wooden outside hex signs (the only screws I could find are the dreaded SLOT HEAD so I am waiting for my evening glass of wine to mellow a bit before I attack that job), doing printing related stuff (business cards, brochures, informational attachments for my display) and making sure I have stuff to paint, eat and drink while at my booth. And sunscreen.

I would have like to have had enough designs to fill BOTH sides of my display, but I think this will do for now.

two new works

I'm still feeling a little frazzled and shell-shocked around the edges but am never-the-less feeling guardedly optimistic about the coming long weekend days. We have been fighting web demons on our hosting server for the past week and THIS webmistress has more than a few new gray hairs.

Tomorrow I'll be up and hit the gym at its 8 AM opening then head directly to the Museum for my photo-shoot. K is doing wash today, so bringing it IN tomorrow will be my only clothing chore... thus liberating me to do the shoot and then come home and attend to some creative stuff.

I am tentatively planning a trip to Jacksonville to visit Michaels and explore some other candle-making options. Our first 4 vigil candle-recycles were a real bust. They sooted up BADLY and only burned for a small fraction of the time their Mex import counterparts did. Am thinking smaller wick... as I found some of the wicking I used when trying this project before (with similar results, different wax) and it was large stuff similar to what we just bought. I am also thinking of getting pre-formed tea light wicks, as we have a bunch of the aluminum cups that we can recycle and I think this would be a good use for recycled wax.

I did finally get two of my new indoor hexen posted to www.dutchhexsign.com's store...
This is a new take on the Heart Chakra hex...

And this is a new version of a change hex.

This is the first in which I have covered the entire surface of the cloth with paint, and I like the effect.

I have obtained a couple of large quilting hoops, so soon will begin work on some larger fabric designs.

I CAN!

Not a hex, but magic. Is it ART? I dunno... but it was fun!

The motivational/self-esteem project that came to me recently is almost done. I will print out the little notes that the cans will contain this evening. Some will be pre-written with "brags" that I know we each should acknowledge; the rest will say "I CAN_______________ __/__/__ " with a space for the can owner to write their own accomplishments or goals to be visualized as reached, with a date.

The lids will be tacked on lightly with hot glue to hold them in place during transit. Each can was initially opened with an opener that leaves no sharp edges on either can or lid, so they are safe to handle.

I CAN complete spur-of-the-moment, fun projects!

In the beginning...

In the beginning I had a blog and I didn't write much, despite having been -- before being a designer and long before being an artist -- a writer. I never could quite get into "morning pages" either.... And it languished and then I got involved with friends who blog and friends who write and I started blogging more frequently, on Live Journal about everything... life, art, spirituality...

And then came Yahoo into the fray with their 360 and I had friends there, so I started blogging there... but mostly it was just the same thing as on my LiveJournal, but with a lot more pictures since -- initially at least it was quite well connected with Flickr.

And then I got involved with a group of artists -- the Worldwide Women Artists Organization (WWAO) and it seems that they all blog here! So I am going to start trying to keep three blogs open.. with this one most thoroughly focused on ART. However, my life does not easily separate into little compartments... so ... do be surprised if I lapse into conversation about things of a spiritual nature. My art is highly spiritual... I paint Pennsylvania "Dutch" style hex signs -- circular, largely non-representational forms that are meant -- and empowered -- as prayers and invocations.

Currently the big news is the inclusion of my latest work Everything She Touches Changes (above) in the WWAO show being held at the Progress Energy Art Gallery in New Port Ritchie, FL during the months of February and March.
